The recent interest in Narrative CVs has provided some evidence of their use for individuals (fellowships, reviews or promotions) but I have not found any evidence (good or otherwise) for use in team projects. Does anyone know any research in this space or have any thoughts? Would you do a collective Narrative CV for the team, have all the team write one individually or just the Chief/primary Investigator? personally, I think individual ones would be too burdensome for reviewers and applicants and I like the idea of a collective CV but wonder if this is practical?

I think narrative CVs are good for personal awards, it is another way of describing your research experience and impact. For team projects, it becomes more complicated. for example how would you navigate completed a collective narrative CV? From recent experience, I had to submit a narrative CVs for each co-applicant in the team. This was a lot of additional effort in chasing co-apps to complete the CV, ensuring they understood the format and making sure they followed the guidance for the CV (word count, size font etc). I also wondered about how as a reviewer you would practically review all the CVs and applications, it would mean additional time needed to go through each team members CV.

Additional work to write applications for research funding and reviewing these added documents is a great example of the unintended consequences of initiatives that are inherently positive but might not need to be implemented across a whole sector.
I haven’t had experience using narrative CVs for funding yet, but have in the past been asked to write brief personal statements when joining panels or committees using the principles of narrative CVs. In those instances, writing about my research experience and research outputs in a narrative format is quite helpful to contextualise expertise in an area.
This is a good reflection and something that I will keep learning about to inform research and evaluations of narrative CVs.
